How are the plurals formed in Hindi? Can we compare it with Tamil plural forms?
Masculine
சிறுவன் chiruvan boy – சிறுவர்கள் chiruvargal boys – ர்கள் rgal added
लड़का லட்கா (ladkaa) boy – लड़के லட்கே (ladke) boys – aa to e change
Feminine
சிறுமி chirumi girl – சிறுமிகள் chirumigal girls – கள் gal added
लड़की லட்கி (ladki) girl – लड़कियाँ லட்கியான் (ladkiyaan) girls – i to yaan
In Hindi the changes depend on how the singular noun ends.
These words end in stops. ऐं (ஏ+ nasal sound) added for plural.
| आँख ஆங்க் (aankh) eye | आँखें ஆங்கே (aankhe) eyes |
| पुस्तक புஸ்தக் (pustak) book | पुस्तकें புஸ்தகேன் (pustaken) books |
| रात ராத் (raath) night | रातें ராதேன (raathae) nights |
| बहन பெ*ஹன் (behan) sister | बहनें பெ*ஹனே (bahene) sisters |
| औरत ஒளரத் (aurath) woman | औरतें ஒளரதே (aurathe) women |
These words end in आ. The end letter aa changes to ए
| लड़का லட்கா (ladkaa) boy | लड़के லட்கே (ladke) boys |
| कुत्ता குத்தா (kuththaa) dog | कुत्ते குத்தே (kuththe) dogs |
| घोड़ा கோடா (ghodaa) horse | घोड़े கோடே (godae) horses |
| कमरा கமரா (kamaraa) room | कमरे கமரே (kamarae) rooms |
| पंखा பங்கா (pankhaa) fan | पंखे பங்கே (pankhe) fans |
| बच्चा பச்சா (bachchaa) child | बच्चे பச்சே (bachchae) children |
For these words ओं is added for plural.
| गुरु குரு (guru) Guru | गुरुओं குருஓ (guruo) Gurus |
| शहर ஷெஹர் (shehar) city | शहरों ஷெஹரோ (sheharo) cities |
| गाँव காவ் (gaav) village | गांवों காவோன் (gaavo) villages |
| आम ஆம் (aam) mango | आमों ஆமோ (aamo) mangoes |
| फल பல் (phal) fruit | फलों பலோ (phalo) fruits |
These words end in इ. याँ is added to make plural forms.
| बिल्ली பில்லீ (billee) cat | बिल्लियाँ பில்லியா (billiyaa) cats |
| रोटी ரோடீ (rotee) bread | रोटियाँ ரோடியா (rotiyaa) bread |
| गाड़ी காடீ** (gadee) car | गाड़ियाँ காடி**யா (gaadiyaa) cars |
| लड़की லட்**கி (ladki) girl | लड़कियाँ லட்**கியா (ladkiyaa) girls |
| साड़ी சாடீ** (saadee) saree | साड़ियाँ சாடி**யா (saadiyaa) sarees |
For some words there is no change in singular and plural forms.
| पेड़ பேட்** (paed) tree & trees फूल பூல் (phool) flower & flowers आदमी ஆத்மீ (aadhmee) man & men घर கர் (ghar) house & houses देश தே**ஷ் (dhesh) country & countries |

How many sons and daughters do you have?
आपके कितने बेटे-बेटियाँ हैं?
aapke kithnae baetae-baetiyaa hain?
How many boys and girls are playing?
कितने लड़के और लड़कियाँ खेल रहे हैं?
kitne ladake aur ladakiyaan khel rahe hain?
How many varieties of fruits are grown in India?
भारत में फलों की कितनी प्रजातियाँ उगाई जाती हैं?
bhaarath mei phalon kee kithnee prajaathiyaan ugaayee jaathee hai?
How many villages have you visited?
आपने कितने गांवों का दौरा किया है?
aapnae kithnae gaanvo ka dhaura kiya hai?
I have ten horses.
मेरे पास दस घोड़े हैं
maerae paas das ghodae hai.
I have spent many sleepless nights.
मैंने कई रातें बिना सोए गुज़ारी हैं.
mainae kayee raathen binaa soyae guzaaree hai.
There are ten rooms in my house.
मेरे घर में दस कमरे हैं.
maerae ghar mei dhas kamarae hai.
We make a hundred rotis evreyday.
हम प्रतिदिन सौ रोटियाँ बनाते हैं।
hum prathidin sau rotiyaa banaathe hai.
In some cases it depends on the context.
The plural form of aam is used differently in these two sentences.
I ate twenty mangoes.
मैंने बीस आम खाये।
mainae bees aam khaaye.
I received a basket of mangoes.
मुझे आमों की एक टोकरी मिली।
mujhe aamo kee ek tokree milee.
The plural form of desh is used differently in these two sentences.
Many countries participated in the event.
इस आयोजन में कई देशों ने हिस्सा लिया.
is aayojan mei kayee desho nae hissa liya.
In this matter many countries are involved.
इस मामले में कई देश शामिल हैं.
is maamlae mei kayee desh shaamil hai.
Now you try to complete these tasks.
- Make sentences with some of the words given here.
- Prepare matching exercises for others to solve.
- Choose any one word and ask the others in class to give you the plural or singular form.
- Prepare a sentence with one of these words and leave out the word for others to supply.
- Write the Tamil translation for those sentences which are given only in English.
